Family Foundations: What’s Flexible and What’s Not for Biblical Families

There are all kinds of things in life that people define differently. Ask ten people what a “good meal” is and you’ll get ten different answers. Some of y’all will say hibachi, some will say Mexican, and some will say whatever that not‑so‑good-for-you food is you keep bragging about. Same thing with cars. Ask for the best car and you’ll hear Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Subaru—everybody’s got their own definition.
But some things aren’t up for debate. If I say “green,” the definition is green. If I say “two plus two,” it’s four no matter where you went to school or what book you read. Some things are flexible. Some things are not.
And when it comes to biblical families, marriage, husband, and wife, the definition belongs to the Creator.
God’s Design for Biblical Families
God started it, God designed it, and God defined it. He created the first man and the first woman with a purpose: fellowship, love, children, and a family structure that would bless generations. And for centuries, that structure worked beautifully.
But the breakdown of the family didn’t start twenty years ago. It began in the late 1950s and 60s when divorce became more acceptable—popularized in places like California and pushed into the culture through Hollywood. What used to be hidden became normal. And slowly, what God designed as stable became seen as strange.
A Word to Those Who Have Been Through Divorce
I want you to hear my heart. I love you. I want what’s best for you, even if it stings a little. Over half of the people reading this have been through a divorce. I’m not here to condemn you. I’m here to help prevent more hurt and to help you heal if you’ve already walked through it.
Scripture is clear: God hates divorce—not divorced people. He hates what divorce does to two people and what it can do to children.
Jesus gave grounds for divorce in cases of sexual immorality. Paul gave grounds when an unbelieving spouse chooses to walk away.
And when it comes to abuse, while Scripture doesn’t give a specific verse saying “leave,” the entire context of God’s heart makes it clear: He does not want anyone living in violence. If you’re being abused, you do not stay silent. You get help. You get out. You do not live that way.
When People Look for a Way Out
There’s another side to this. Some people aren’t facing abuse or abandonment—they’re simply looking for a reason to get out.
“I don’t love him anymore.” “She doesn’t look like she used to.” “The girl at work is hotter.”
That’s not biblical. That’s not God’s plan. And it leads to destruction every single time.
God’s design is simple: one man, one woman, joined together, becoming one flesh, raising children in the admonition of the Lord - for life. That’s the plan He blesses. That’s the plan that works.
Why We Don’t See God’s Design Much Anymore
The problem is we don’t see much of that anymore. Culture has made divorce normal. And when divorce becomes normal, everything else starts becoming normal too—things God never intended (see Romans 1 if you have any illusions about this).
When culture influences us more than Scripture, families fall apart, and society follows right behind.
A Warning to Young Couples and Teens
Young couples, dating couples, teenagers—before you get emotionally involved, before you get physically involved, you better make sure you are in the perfect will of God.
Prevention is so much better than trying to heal after the fact.
The road to recovery is long, painful, and complicated. Many of you know that firsthand.
Girls, Pay Attention to Red Flags
Girls, listen to me. If he’s emotionally abusive in eighth grade, if he’s controlling in ninth grade, if he tells you who you can and can’t talk to—that’s your red flag. Emotional abuse almost always leads to physical abuse down the road.
Delete him. Block him. Give him your daddy’s number. And if you don’t know your daddy, give him mine. I’m not joking.
You want a boyfriend. God created you that way. But the enemy will make Billy look good when Billy is not good. He’ll talk about church, Vacation Bible School, whatever he needs to say to hook you. Don’t fall for it.
If there’s no fruit that he loves Jesus, delete him and move on.
The Ripple Effect of Broken Homes
When a dad walks away, when a mom immediately starts dating again, when instability becomes normal, the child pays the price.
The odds of that child ending up in prison double. The odds of poverty triple. Emotional scarring skyrockets. And the odds of repeating the same cycle go through the roof.
Grades drop. Confidence drops. Stability disappears.
This is why God hates divorce. Not because He hates you, but because He loves you and He loves your children.
The Redeeming Power of God
But hear me: we serve a redeeming God. No matter what you’ve done, no matter what happened, no matter who was at fault—God can redeem it. God can restore. God can heal.
There may be consequences, but there is also grace. Don’t walk around condemned. If you’re in Christ, there is no condemnation. Let God forgive you. Release the guilt. Release the shame. And commit to doing it right from this day forward.
For Those Who Grew Up in Stable Homes
If you grew up in a stable home—where your parents loved each other, where divorce never crossed your mind—don’t take that for granted. Fight for it. On the hard days, fight for it. Because your kids are watching. And the stability you create today becomes the foundation they stand on tomorrow.
For Married Couples Today
If you’re married and both of you are believers, you need goals. Spiritual goals. Financial goals. Family goals. You need to remember spiritual warfare is real. Your fight is not against flesh and blood.
Pray for your marriage. Pray for your kids. Pray for protection. Get in the Word. Build your home on the solid rock of Jesus Christ.
For Families Already Fractured
If your family is already fractured, if your kids are hurting, if your grown children are struggling, if you’re dealing with emotional fallout—God can redeem that too.
Let Him forgive you. Let Him heal you. Let Him restore what was broken. And use your story to help someone else avoid the same pain.
For Strong, Biblical Families
If your family is stable and biblical—stand strong. The enemy has his eye on you. He wants to destroy what you have. Keep your guard up. Stay prayed up.
Protect your home. Protect your marriage. Protect your children.
Build your life on Jesus Christ, because without Him, the odds of making it in this culture are slim to none.
Be the One Who Starts Fresh
If your background wasn’t stable, you be the one to start fresh. You be the one to say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” You be the one to break the cycle. You be the one to build something new.
Your family matters. Your marriage matters. Your children matter. Your grandchildren matter.
And today can be the day everything changes—if you decide to build on the solid rock.
